The Premiere Screening
So the outdoor screening was moved indoor to Cool Hand of a Girl due to threat of rain. We had a full house and many positive comments after the screening. One comment however begs further response. One viewer criticized the project for its use of video technology in an experiment in non-capitalist social relations, when the technology itself is a product of highly organized and unequal capitalist production. I think that this is an important consideration; we are in fact living in a state of contradiction between our privileged relation as Westerners to the labor in the rest of the world, and furthermore we are in contradiction in every aspect of our lives from recycling to voting. this makes me think about the superficial state of our enfranchisement; that while we are supposed to be the freest in the world we also live with incredible ethical limits on our actions. So much is demanded of us that we don't necessarily agree with, but we submit to. This is the price we pay for the variety and cheapness of commodities in the store. When we try to justify our use of technology I think we're in danger of erasing the truth of our actions as well as that of the exploited labor of tech production. I think it is important to sit with this sense of profound hypocrisy as part of a self-understanding. I personally feel that we can act outside of capitalist relations, or with one foot in and one foot out...I look forward to more experiments in this project. As such, we are planning another attempt at the outdoor screening for Thursday, Sept-3 at 8:30.
