Hello Everyone,
Here's the bizarre twist:
I spoke with Michael Menegon from the Junction bia today. He has viewed the first disc of video's I dropped with him and he LOVES them. He then showed them to someone from Moviola (a short film tv station with poduction in the Junction) and they proposed the possibility of sponsoring a screening of the project on Sept 10th, which would be during the Junction Arts Fair. It would be in the same spot we are proposing with all the technical stuff supplied, and it would possibly be licensed. As well, there may be vj's on hand from Moviola to interview video artists...
I told him that I would put this idea to the group. I asked if the group didn't want to do the screening under the auspices of Moviola would we be able to do it as originally proposed (on our own sweet steam on the 27th or 28th)...he said there would be some other issues they would need to consider such as insurance...
If we don't want to screen under the auspices of Moviola, and are forced to consider an alternate location I would propose Vine street park as the best alternative.
Let me know what you all think...
Kim

Congrats, Kim - That sounds like a great opportunity for your project!

as i sit here editing...
first of all this is a great response! yeah to all the brave videographers....
i don't know much about movieola. i know they took the space i used to do nia in! argh. but that aside. i also like the idea of vine street park.
kim, when i read your note i wondered if there was subtle pressure (coercion) to acquiesce to the demands of the bia and have movieola involved and do it on a different date? or am i reading into it! that happens. or was there just general excitement from the bia to have a larger audience?
when i am doing work on my own or in other groups i do on occasion make concessions... and mostly to get the work out. so to put the work into multiple venues, both solicited and unsolicited is always a good idea. the question becomes: who is the audience for these works? will it begin a conversation if shown on september 10? would a showing on sept 10 preclude a vine street showing?
i had thought also of the idea of insurance. VAO has some available but i don't know the cost. would Movieola cover that cost?
and that is it... back to editing....

Here are a few of my thoughts:
1. I think we have to go back and review our mission statement to help guide us on many many issues.
We apply a question or issue like Who's our audience against it and then see who it guides or doesn't guide us.
And perhaps refine or amend it. Then derive a few key goals from the axiomatic statement.
2. The idea of the small public screening was to help us work through the issues amongst ourselves and a small audience, I think.
If we go ahead with a BIG screening there are pluses and minuses.
Pros: Larger audience, greater awareness, uninvited affiliations / alliances will undoubtedly arise to help achieve our goals (assuming we know what they are)
Cons: We lose control, we don't know who we are, we don't know what we're doing, we don't know how to we do things together, uninvited affiliations / alliances will undoubtedly arise (we can be used for other people's agenda).
3. When a VJ comes around to ask you who are you, what are you doing and why are you doing it, how do you answer?
Do we need to answer? Do we need to know? Why wait? Should we engage a larger audience even if we don't know the answers to these questions?
4. They're excited to have us because
a. the work is really good
b. they're blood sucking leeches whose senses say - FREE BUFFET
c. it's a win / win situation for them and us as we acccomplish our mutual interests
d. all of the above
5. They need us us more than we need them if our goal is not necessarily having a large immediate exposure.
a. Moviola needs content, especially cheap (as in free) and good content.
b. I don't recall the Junction Festival having activist film nights engaging the community. I seem to remember food and stuff being sold, some modern dance and music, plus a bunch of art galleries. Are people talking about real issues of the community during the festival?
6. Since we don't have time, maybe we can decide with the usual:
a. What's the best thing that can happen if we go this way and or that way?
b. What's the worst thing that can happen if we go this way and or that way?

If we do it on the 10th Moviola is the sponsor and provides everything...yes I did feel pressure, Michael Menegon really wants the project in the Junction Arts Festival. Rebecca suggested that if we go ahead with this suggestion we meet with Moviola and make sure we have a contract. Check out their website if you want...Personally I wouldn't want to show the project on their tv station, but having them sponsor a outdoor screening??? I don't know. I liked the organic idea to start anyways...then discuss. But I'm open. I'm happy that the first people outside our group to see it responded so positively. K

Wow?
I think it might be good to use Moviola to show a grass roots project from neighbourhood. Also it helps to keep the Junction business community connected to what is blossoming from within.
It should however be compared by members of The Project as the quality of the presenters on Moviola is sometimes a little .... uhm ...... shallow?

My two cents worth: I always get excited at the possibility of a larger audience having access to great ideas and content, but I do understand the issues at hand... I kind of think that as long as the integrity of the vision is kept in tact, as well as full control over dissemination, etc., it would be useful, even for pr, etc.... which could bring the project in contact with more eyeballs, etc... but only if the project is ready, because it doesn't hurt to do the smaller, more grassroots screening as a test, etc. i'm sure the opportunity would extend into the future if you wanted to avail at a later date, if it didn't feel quite right now. but, in the meantime, as long as this was a gentle assistance, instead of a takeover/ownership, it could probably work. just negotiate terms that are satisfactory and that ensure this outcome....
if you want to consider this route, i'd be happy to help with helping negotiate or mediating that, if you want. i know romen, the owner of movieola, a little bit and have met with their commissioning editor before...

Spider I know that you are trying to foresee see all pitfalls to avoid exploitation of this project but isn't this just what a festival needs - a little something to feed the mind too.

Nancy,
Thanks for the great work on setting up the blog.
I've just posted the first versions of a logotype as well as a couple of background pieces on the word money and it's classical associations. I notice I'm the only person to have posted thus far and am wondering if the email activity this morning might be included in the blog. We are losing the timeline aspect of our dialogue as well as the all in one format that the blog facilitates so well.
Cheers,
Mike

I like the idea of adding different content to the usual prosiac street festival. There is a very mixed crowd and the people who respond to The Project will engage and the rest will wander off with something to think about as they search for other gratifications.
